The story
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the annual observance in 1992, following earlier international work that included the 1981 International Year of Disabled Persons and the subsequent UN Decade. Its purpose is to advance participation, accessibility and the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in political, social, economic and cultural life. The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006 strengthened a rights-based approach: disability is not treated only as an individual medical condition, but also in relation to barriers created by environments, services, attitudes and institutions. The day is therefore used to highlight accessible design, inclusive education and employment, independent living, representation and equal decision-making. It also recognizes people with disabilities as leaders and contributors rather than only recipients of assistance.
