In short
Labh Chaturthi is a festival observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.
The story
Labh Chaturthi is a Gujarati observance connected with the auspicious reopening of work and trade after the Diwali and New Year holidays. 'Labh' means gain or benefit, and the day expresses the wish that new business activity should begin with good fortune, clear judgement and honest effort. Families and traders worship Ganesha and Lakshmi, revisit the account books sanctified during Chopda Puja, and may formally resume shops, offices or commercial transactions. In some traditions the day is also associated with Ganesha Chaturthi worship and is regarded as a favourable time for beginning a venture or making the first transaction of the new year. Its meaning is not simply the pursuit of profit: the auspicious 'labh' sought is prosperity that comes through orderly work, right conduct and blessings at the start of a fresh business cycle.
Why it matters
Labh Chaturthi is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.
What people do
