Labh Pancham

Labh Pancham is the traditional closing point of the Gujarati Diwali holiday period and a day associated with auspicious resumption of work. “Labh” means gain or benefit, and the festival links prosperity with the blessings of Ganesha, Lakshmi and Sharda. In older mercantile practice, account books worshipped during Diwali’s Chopda Pujan were opened for business after the holiday, often with the words Shubh and Labh written as an invocation of an auspicious and profitable year. Even where accounting is now digital, many Gujarati shops, offices and family businesses retain the symbolic first transaction or reopening on Labh Pancham. Families visit temples, exchange greetings and sweets and may complete Lakshmi or Sharda worship if it could not be performed earlier. The day represents beginning commercial activity again with gratitude, ethical intention and hope for prosperity.

Labh Pancham is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Shops that have been shut since Diwali open in the morning at a muhurta. The new ledger is opened, the first entry written, and sweets are given out. Many families make the first purchase of the year on it rather than on Dhanteras.

Almost entirely Gujarati. Elsewhere the same tithi is Gyan Panchami for Jains, or Nag Panchami's Kartik counterpart, and the reopening of business carries no particular day.
