In short
A month camped on the sand at the Sangam, every year, whether or not it is a Kumbh year.
The story
Prayagraj holds a mela through the month of Magh in every year, and the twelve-year Kumbh is only the largest of them. A city of tents goes up on the sand between the Ganga and the Yamuna from Paush Purnima and comes down at Maha Shivratri. Those who stay the whole month are kalpvasis: they live on one meal a day, sleep on the ground, bathe three times and do not leave.
Why it matters
The Kumbh is what everyone has heard of, but the Magh Mela is what happens every year, and kalpvas is a month-long discipline that the crowd around it tends to hide.
