The story
Maha Navami is the culminating worship day of Sharad Navratri and the final major day of Durga Puja before Vijayadashami. In the Devi tradition it remembers Goddess Durga as Mahishasuramardini, the power who defeats Mahishasura and restores moral order after the gods are unable to overcome him. The day follows the intense worship of Maha Ashtami and is marked in many communities by Navami Homa, recitation of the Devi Mahatmya, offerings to the Goddess and Kanya Puja. In eastern India, Durga Puja reaches its devotional climax with elaborate rituals and communal worship; in other regions the ninth form of Navadurga, Siddhidatri, is especially honoured. Maha Navami therefore represents completion, victory approaching, and the awakening of disciplined strength before the celebration of Vijayadashami.
