The story
National Pollution Control Day is observed on 2 December in memory of the victims of the Bhopal gas disaster and to focus attention on preventing industrial and environmental pollution. On the night of 2–3 December 1984, toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. Thousands of people died in the immediate aftermath and many more suffered long-term respiratory, eye and other health problems; the disaster also left enduring questions about industrial safety, corporate accountability and environmental remediation. The commemorative day uses this tragedy as a warning that pollution control is not an abstract issue—it can be a matter of life, health and justice for communities living near industry. Awareness programmes therefore emphasise safer industrial processes, monitoring of air, water and waste, emergency preparedness and stronger public responsibility for preventing another disaster of comparable scale.
