National Voters' Day

National Voters' Day is observed on 25 January, the foundation day of the Election Commission of India, which was established on 25 January 1950. The observance began in 2011 with a particular aim: identify newly eligible voters, especially young citizens turning eighteen, and encourage them to register and participate in elections. Voter identity cards, enrolment drives, pledges and awareness programmes became central features. The date also highlights the Election Commission's constitutional responsibility to supervise elections to Parliament, state legislatures and the offices of President and Vice-President. National Voters' Day is therefore not a celebration of any political party or election result. Its focus is the voter as a democratic participant—someone who should be registered, informed, free from coercion and able to cast a ballot. The day reinforces that universal adult franchise becomes meaningful only when citizens actually have access to and confidence in the electoral process.
