The story
Parashurama Jayanti honours Parashurama, the axe-bearing warrior-sage regarded as the sixth avatar of Vishnu in many traditions. Born to sage Jamadagni and Renuka, Parashurama belongs simultaneously to the worlds of Brahmin learning and Kshatriya warfare. Puranic and epic stories describe a violent age in which arrogant rulers abused power. After the killing of Jamadagni by the sons of King Kartavirya Arjuna, Parashurama undertook fierce campaigns against oppressive Kshatriyas, becoming a complex figure of justice, anger and penance. Later traditions also place him as a teacher of great warriors and connect him with the creation or settlement of parts of India's western coast. His jayanti invites reflection not simply on martial strength but on the responsibility that accompanies power, the danger of uncontrolled anger and the return from conflict to austerity and spiritual discipline.
