Prabodhini Ekadashi

Prabodhini Ekadashi, also called Devuthani or Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi, marks the traditional awakening of Vishnu after the four months of Chaturmas. Devshayani Ekadashi begins the period in which Vishnu is poetically described as entering yoga-nidra; on this Kartika Ekadashi he “awakens”, and the cycle of major auspicious household ceremonies resumes in many communities. The day is therefore less about one single katha and more about a seasonal sacred transition. Vishnu is worshipped with lamps, Tulsi, sugarcane and seasonal offerings, and devotees often draw symbolic footprints or create a small ceremonial mandap. Tulsi Vivah is celebrated on this day or in the following days according to regional practice, symbolically opening the Hindu wedding season. Fasting, bhajan, night vigil and Dwadashi parana remain central Ekadashi observances.

Vishnu wakes, and the four months of pause end. The wedding season opens the next day with Tulsi Vivah, so this is the hinge the second half of the year turns on. Also called Dev Uthi or Devutthana - the raising of the god.

Kept like any ekadashi, and broken the next morning into a season rather than into an ordinary day. Sugarcane, water chestnut and the first amla of the year are offered - what the fields have just given.
