Ratha Saptami

Ratha Saptami is dedicated to Surya and is also called Surya Jayanti, Achala Saptami or Magha Saptami. Its central image is the Sun God riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, driven by Aruna. The seven horses are interpreted in different traditions as the seven colours of light, seven days or seven metres of Vedic poetry, while the moving chariot represents the Sun’s life-giving journey through time. The festival comes in the bright half of Magha, not long after Makara Sankranti, and is treated as a celebration of increasing light and solar energy. Devotees traditionally bathe before sunrise, sometimes placing arka leaves on the body, offer arghya to the rising Sun and recite Surya prayers such as Aditya Hridaya or Gayatri. The day links gratitude for sunlight, health and agricultural life with the spiritual symbolism of moving from darkness toward clarity.

A bath at first light with arka leaves on the head and shoulders, facing the sun, and water offered from cupped hands while it rises. A rangoli of a chariot with seven horses is drawn at the door. Kheer cooked in the open on a new stove is offered and eaten.
