Thaipusam

Thaipusam is a major Tamil festival devoted to Lord Murugan, the youthful warrior deity also known as Kartikeya or Subrahmanya. Its central sacred image is the vel, the divine spear given to Murugan by his mother Parvati so that he could defeat destructive forces represented in tradition by powerful asuras. The festival therefore emphasizes courage directed by divine wisdom rather than aggression for its own sake. Devotees prepare through prayer, vegetarian discipline and vows, then carry offerings—often kavadi structures, milk pots or other forms of pledged service—to Murugan temples. Some undertake demanding acts of penance as fulfilment of a vow. Great celebrations take place at Tamil Murugan shrines in India and in Tamil communities across Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and elsewhere. Thaipusam expresses gratitude for answered prayers, purification and determination to overcome ego, fear and harmful habits.

Thaipusam is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

The kavadi is carried on the shoulders, from a simple arch of wood to a frame held by hooks and skewers through the skin, and the carrier walks to the temple in trance with drums ahead. A head is shaved, milk is carried in a pot on it, and the pot is poured over the image at the end.

Tamil Nadu - Palani, Thiruparankundram - and far more visibly the Tamil diaspora: Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur draws over a million, and Singapore, Mauritius, South Africa and Sri Lanka keep it as the community's largest day of the year.
