Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of sacred Tulsi with Vishnu, usually represented as Shaligram or Krishna, and it marks the reopening of the traditional wedding season after Chaturmas. Its best-known legend begins with Vrinda, a devoted wife whose spiritual power protected her husband Jalandhara. In the complex Puranic story, Vishnu’s intervention broke the protection that made Jalandhara invincible, allowing Shiva to defeat him. Grieving Vrinda cursed Vishnu, and after her death she became associated with the sacred Tulsi plant. Vishnu in turn granted Tulsi an honoured place in his worship and the promise of a ceremonial union. During Tulsi Vivah families decorate the Tulsi plant like a bride, prepare a small mandap, place Shaligram or a Vishnu image as the groom and perform wedding-style rituals, songs, aarti and prasad. The festival turns household Tulsi worship into a joyful community marriage ceremony.

Tulsi Vivah is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

A tulsi in the courtyard is dressed as a bride with a sari, bangles and a chunri, and married to a shaligram or a branch of sugarcane, with the full form - mandap, mangalashtak, and a meal after. It is the first wedding of the season and the reason no other could be held for the four months before it.

Kept over one to five days depending on the region, and the day after Prabodhini Ekadashi in most reckonings. Maharashtra and Gujarat keep it most fully as a wedding, with invitations. In parts of the north the marriage is to a shaligram stone brought from the Gandaki.
