The story
Vagh Baras is the Gujarati name associated with Govatsa Dwadashi, a day of reverence for the cow and calf at the beginning of the Diwali period. The word is also popularly interpreted in Gujarat through “vagh” or “vasu” usage, but the devotional heart of the observance is the bond between the cow and her young one. Cows have long been connected with nourishment, agriculture, Krishna devotion and household economy, so worship on this day expresses gratitude for care and sustenance rather than simply material prosperity. Families clean and decorate cows where the custom is living, apply kumkum or turmeric, offer fodder and perform aarti. Women in some communities observe a vrata for the well-being of children and avoid consuming cow’s milk or certain grain products for the day. In business culture Vagh Baras also marks the approach of Dhanteras and the closing phase of the old accounting year before Diwali.

What people do
Cows and calves are bathed, marked and fed something sweet. Traders make no new entry in the old book after this day. In Saurashtra the cattle are brought out properly, and in cities it has mostly narrowed to the account books and the sweets.
