In short

Valmiki Jayanti is a Jayanti observed according to the Hindu calendar. Its date and customary practices can vary by region and local Panchang.

The story

Valmiki Jayanti honours Maharishi Valmiki, traditionally revered as the Adi Kavi, the first great poet, and as the composer of the Sanskrit Ramayana. Devotional tradition tells of a profound transformation from an earlier life of wrongdoing into one of contemplation after an encounter that forced him to examine the moral consequences of his actions. Through deep tapas and spiritual awakening he becomes Valmiki, the sage whose epic gives literary form to the life of Rama and enduring questions of duty, loyalty, justice and human choice. The Ramayana also places Sita in Valmiki's hermitage during her later exile, where her sons Lava and Kusha grow up and learn the epic. On his Jayanti, communities hold processions, recitations, prayer and cultural programmes, honouring both spiritual transformation and the power of literature to shape moral imagination across generations.

Why it matters

Valmiki Jayanti is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

What people do

Shobha yatras are taken out and the Ramayana is read. It is a public holiday in several states and is kept particularly by communities who name themselves after him. Temples read the Balkand, which is where the anthill and the bird both are.

Told differently elsewhere

Kept across north India as a literary and religious anniversary, and kept far more strongly by the Valmiki community of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan, for whom it is the principal festival of the year and marked with processions.
