The story
Varaha Jayanti celebrates Vishnu's Varaha, or boar, incarnation. Puranic accounts describe the demon Hiranyaksha dragging the Earth, personified as Bhudevi, into the cosmic waters. Vishnu assumed the powerful form of Varaha, plunged into the depths, fought Hiranyaksha and lifted the Earth back to its rightful place on his tusks. The image of Varaha carrying Bhudevi became one of the most striking symbols of Vishnu as the restorer of cosmic order. The story is not only about defeating a demon; it portrays creation itself being rescued when balance has been violently disturbed. Devotees worship Vishnu in the Varaha form, recite stories of the Dashavatara and remember the duty to protect the Earth and uphold dharma. Temples dedicated to Varaha preserve several regional versions of the episode, but the rescue of Bhudevi remains the central narrative.
