The story
Varalakshmi Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi in her boon-giving form, Varalakshmi, and is especially observed by married women in parts of South India. A widely told vrata-katha speaks of Charumati, a virtuous woman who received a dream in which Lakshmi instructed her to perform this worship on a Friday in the month of Shravana. Charumati followed the instructions with other women, worshipping a decorated kalasha as the presence of the Goddess; the story says their households were blessed with prosperity and well-being. The observance links material abundance with auspicious family life, generosity and disciplined devotion rather than wealth alone. Homes are cleaned, a sacred pot is decorated, Lakshmi is invoked with flowers and offerings, and a blessed thread is often tied after the puja.
