The story
Varuthini Ekadashi is linked in popular vrata tradition with King Mandhata, a righteous ruler who spent time in meditation on the banks of the Narmada. During one period of austerity a wild bear attacked him and grievously injured his leg, yet the king continued to remember Vishnu rather than respond in anger. The story says Vishnu protected him and explained that the suffering was connected with past karma, then directed Mandhata to observe Varuthini Ekadashi and worship the Varaha form of Vishnu. The king followed the instruction and was restored. “Varuthini” carries the sense of protection or armour, and the katha turns that idea inward: the strongest protection is disciplined conduct, patience and refuge in the divine during adversity. Devotees worship Vishnu, fast from grains, avoid anger and indulgence, give charity and perform Dwadashi parana according to the local Panchang.

Why it matters
Kept for protection - varuthini means armoured. The fast is said to guard what has been gained rather than to gain anything, which sets it apart from the ones that promise.
