The story
Vautha stands at a sangam - seven rivers by the local count, the Sabarmati and the Vatrak by the map - and on Kartik Purnima a fair has been held there for as long as anyone records. It is the only large donkey market in Gujarat and one of the very few left in India: the animals are painted in bright colours for the sale, and camels are traded beside them. The Siddhnath temple on the bank is the reason the date is Kartik Purnima and not a market day.
Why it matters
A trading fair that is also a bathing day, and the trade is in the animal nobody else holds a fair for.
What people do
The bathe at the sangam is taken at first light on the purnima, before the market opens.
