The story
World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December, grew out of the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic during the 1980s. In 1988, WHO communications officers Thomas Netter and James Bunn proposed an annual day that could bring public attention to HIV, encourage prevention and treatment, and reduce the fear and stigma surrounding people living with the virus. The idea was taken up through the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS and became the first widely recognised international health day devoted to a disease. Over time, the observance has evolved alongside major advances in HIV testing, antiretroviral treatment and prevention, while continuing to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. The red ribbon, introduced by activists in 1991, became its best-known symbol. Campaigns today combine remembrance with calls for accessible treatment, accurate information, testing, prevention, dignity and an end to discrimination.
