Chhattisgarh Day

Chhattisgarh Day marks 1 November 2000, when Chhattisgarh became a separate Indian state after being carved out of Madhya Pradesh under the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000. The new state brought together districts with a long-standing regional identity centred on the Chhattisgarh plain and extensive forest and tribal areas. Raipur became the capital. Statehood followed decades of discussion about administration, development and recognition of the region’s distinct cultural and economic character. Chhattisgarh is rich in tribal communities, languages and traditions, mineral resources, forests and rice-growing agriculture, and the formation of the state created a government focused specifically on those local conditions. The anniversary is therefore more than a boundary change: cultural festivals, public programmes and exhibitions often celebrate folk forms, crafts, dance, food and the contributions of Adivasi and rural communities. It is a yearly reflection on regional identity and the responsibilities that came with separate statehood.
