Dharo Atham

Dharo Atham is a Gujarati monsoon-season observance centered on dharo, the sacred green grass identified with durva. Fresh grass survives, spreads and renews itself even after being cut, so it came to symbolize continuity, fertility and the long life of a family line. On Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami, women in many Gujarati communities worship a patch or bundle of dharo grass, offer water, kumkum, grains or food and pray for the health of children and prosperity of the household. The day falls in the same sacred period as Radha Ashtami and is sometimes linked with wider Durvashtami traditions found elsewhere in India. Rather than depending on one universally told legend, Dharo Atham is carried mainly through household custom: honouring a humble but resilient plant as a sign of life that continues to grow across generations.
