Dhuleti

Dhuleti is the joyful colour celebration that follows Holika Dahan and is especially familiar in Gujarat as the second day of Holi. Its religious background is connected with the wider Holi traditions: the burning of Holika recalls Prahlada’s survival through devotion to Vishnu, while the play of colours is strongly associated with Krishna, Radha and the springtime festivities of Braj. On Dhuleti morning, social boundaries soften as families, friends and neighbourhoods greet one another with gulal and coloured water, music and festive food. In Gujarat the day is often less ritual-heavy than Holika Dahan; its emphasis is community, reconciliation, laughter and the arrival of spring. The transition from the previous night’s sacred fire to the next day’s colours is commonly understood as a movement from the destruction of hostility toward renewed friendship and vitality.

Dhuleti is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

Dry colour first and water after, and by afternoon it is over and everybody is washing. Gujarat keeps it shorter than the north does. Bhang is drunk in some houses and not in most. The day is the one afternoon in the year when the age and standing of the person you have just soaked does not count.

Called Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi across the north, Dhuleti in Gujarat, Rang Panchami in Maharashtra five days later. Braj plays with flowers at Vrindavan and with sticks at Barsana; Punjab turns it into Hola Mohalla.
