Easter
No rule yet
Nobody has written a rule for this observance yet, so the calendar does not put it on a day. A name with a made-up date beside it would be worse than a name on its own.
In short
Easter is the central Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospel narratives tell that after Jesus was crucified and buried, women followers came to his tomb early on the first day of the week and found it empty.
The story
Easter is the central Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospel narratives tell that after Jesus was crucified and buried, women followers came to his tomb early on the first day of the week and found it empty. They received the message that he had risen, and the New Testament describes appearances of the risen Jesus to his disciples. For Christians this is more than a return from death: it is the foundation of the belief that sin and death do not have the final word and that new life is possible through Christ. Easter follows Holy Week and the sorrow of Good Friday, so the movement from darkness to joy is central to its meaning. Churches celebrate with vigils, bells, hymns, scripture readings and the Eucharist or Holy Communion. Families may gather for festive meals, while eggs and other symbols of new life have become popular cultural traditions. The date varies each year according to the Christian paschal calculation.
Retold from the Gujarati household practice
Why it matters
Easter is significant to the community that observes it and helps preserve religious, family and cultural continuity.
What people do
A vigil on the Saturday night, lit from one candle, and the first service of the morning. Lent's fasting ends. Eggs, painted or given, are the old sign of it. In Kerala and Goa the day is kept with a family meal that breaks forty days of restraint.

Told differently elsewhere
The date is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, so it moves across five weeks. Orthodox churches compute the same rule on the Julian calendar and usually land one to five weeks later, which is why Easter is the feast most likely to be kept twice in one town.
