The story
Engineers' Day in India is observed on 15 September, the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the country's most celebrated engineers and administrators. Born in 1861, Visvesvaraya became known for work in water management, irrigation and flood protection and later served as the Diwan of Mysore. His career joined technical problem-solving with public administration and industrial development, making him a symbol of engineering in service of society. Projects associated with his era helped modernise infrastructure and planning in princely Mysore, while his writings advocated education, industry and disciplined national development. India awarded him the Bharat Ratna in 1955. Engineers' Day therefore honours both his legacy and the broader profession—people who turn scientific knowledge into bridges, water systems, machines, software, energy networks and other practical systems on which modern life depends.
