Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Visarjan is the ceremonial farewell to Lord Ganesha after his worship during Ganeshotsav. A clay image installed on Ganesh Chaturthi is treated as a sacred guest: it is worshipped for one and a half, three, five, seven or more days according to family or community tradition, with Anant Chaturdashi being the best-known concluding day. Before immersion, devotees offer a final aarti, flowers, coconut and sweets, then carry Ganesha in procession with music and devotional chants to a river, lake, sea or designated immersion place. The immersion expresses a central idea of Hindu worship—the divine form is lovingly invited, honoured and then released, while the divine presence itself is understood to remain. The farewell is therefore joyful and emotional at once, accompanied by the hope that Ganesha will return the following year.
