The story
Haryana Day commemorates 1 November 1966, when Haryana was created as a separate state under the Punjab Reorganisation Act. After Indian independence, the larger Punjab region contained communities with different linguistic and administrative demands. The reorganisation separated mainly Hindi-speaking areas into Haryana, while Punjabi-speaking areas remained in Punjab; Chandigarh became a Union Territory and the shared capital of both states, and some hill territories were transferred toward Himachal Pradesh. The new state began with Chandigarh as its administrative capital and developed a distinct governmental identity around its towns, villages and agricultural economy. Haryana later became closely associated with the Green Revolution, sports, industry around the National Capital Region and a strong rural cultural heritage. Formation Day recalls the political and linguistic process that produced the modern state and is marked by public programmes highlighting Haryanvi language, folk music, dance, agriculture, service and achievement.
