In short
International Day of Yoga is an international awareness or commemorative observance and is optional in the calendar.
The story
The International Day of Yoga is observed on 21 June and connects an ancient Indian practice with a modern global observance. Yoga includes traditions of physical posture, breath discipline, concentration, meditation and ethical self-cultivation that developed in India over many centuries and in different schools. India proposed an international yoga day at the United Nations in 2014. On 11 December that year, the General Assembly adopted resolution 69/131, supported by 175 member states, proclaiming 21 June as the International Day of Yoga; the first observance followed in 2015. The date falls near the June solstice, a significant seasonal turning point in the Northern Hemisphere. The day is commonly marked by group yoga sessions, demonstrations and educational programmes. Its broader message is that regular, mindful practice can support balance between body and mind and encourage preventive health, self-discipline and well-being.
Why it matters
International Day of Yoga is intended to build public awareness and encourage attention to its associated global issue.
