In short

Commemorates the birth of Saint Jalaram Bapa of Virpur, remembered for devotion, service and feeding those in need.

The story

Jalaram Bapa Jayanti commemorates the birth of the nineteenth-century Gujarati saint Jalaram, born in Virpur in Saurashtra. From a young age he was drawn more to service, pilgrimage and the company of saints than to trade. Together with his wife Virbai, he established a tradition of feeding travellers, ascetics and anyone who came hungry, without distinction of caste, community or wealth. The Virpur 'Jalaram Prasadi' tradition grew from this ideal of sada-vrat—continuous, selfless food service. Stories about Jalaram Bapa emphasize humility, faith in Rama and extraordinary generosity, and devotees remember many accounts in which help arrived through his compassion and prayer. His jayanti is therefore less a celebration of personal grandeur than a remembrance of seva: feeding others, giving quietly and treating service to people as service to God.

Why it matters

Jalaram Bapa Jayanti is valued for devotion, family tradition and the spiritual or seasonal meaning attached to the day.

What people do

Virpur fills for the day and the annakshetra runs without stopping. Jalaram temples elsewhere hold the same free meal, and many Gujarati houses abroad cook and give food rather than travel.
