The story
Karnataka Rajyotsava commemorates the political unification of Kannada-speaking regions on 1 November 1956. Before the States Reorganisation Act, Kannada speakers lived under several administrations, including the former Mysore State and parts of Bombay, Hyderabad, Madras and Coorg. The long Kannada Ekikarana movement argued that communities sharing the Kannada language and cultural heritage should be brought together in one state. The enlarged state was initially called Mysore; on 1 November 1973 it was renamed Karnataka, a name that better represented the wider region. Rajyotsava therefore remembers both state formation and the cultural movement behind it. Across Karnataka, the day is marked with the state flag colours, Kannada songs, cultural programmes, processions and honours such as the Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards, celebrating contributions to literature, arts, public service and society.
