The story
Kurma Jayanti honours Lord Vishnu's tortoise incarnation, Kurma, whose story is inseparable from the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean. The devas and asuras agree to churn the ocean in search of amrita, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. When the enormous mountain begins to sink, Vishnu assumes the form of a giant tortoise and supports it on his back, giving the entire undertaking a stable foundation. From the churning emerge many treasures and divine beings, including Goddess Lakshmi, before the nectar finally appears. Kurma's role is quiet but indispensable: rather than winning through force, the avatar bears an immense weight so that a difficult collective task can continue. The festival therefore evokes patience, stability, support and steady effort beneath visible achievement.
