Madhya Pradesh Day marks the reorganisation that created the state on 1 November 1956. The States Reorganisation Act redrew many Indian state boundaries largely around language and administrative considerations. The new Madhya Pradesh brought together the former Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal with most of the earlier Madhya Pradesh region, with Bhopal becoming the capital. The state's boundaries changed again on 1 November 2000 when its eastern districts were separated to form Chhattisgarh. The observance remembers this modern political history while also celebrating the varied cultures of Malwa, Bundelkhand, Baghelkhand, Mahakoshal and the state's tribal regions. Government ceremonies, cultural performances, exhibitions and programmes on local art, heritage and development commonly form part of the celebrations, presenting Madhya Pradesh as a state shaped by several historical regions brought into a single administrative identity.
