The story
Narasimha Jayanti recalls the appearance of Lord Vishnu as Narasimha, the man-lion avatar, to protect the child devotee Prahlada. Prahlada's father, the powerful asura king Hiranyakashipu, had obtained a boon intended to make him nearly impossible to kill and demanded that everyone worship him. Prahlada refused to abandon his devotion to Vishnu despite repeated punishments. When Hiranyakashipu challenged him by asking whether Vishnu was present in a pillar, Vishnu burst forth from it as Narasimha at twilight, on a threshold, neither fully man nor beast, and destroyed the tyrant without violating the conditions of the boon. The story is remembered as a declaration that sincere devotion and righteousness cannot ultimately be crushed by power or pride.
