The story
The Vietnamese lunar new year, and the country's largest festival: debts are settled, houses are painted and everybody goes home. Who crosses the threshold first on the morning of the first day is held to set the tone of the year, so the family often arranges who it will be. Why it matters
The Vietnamese lunar new year, and the year's whole tone is held to be set in its first hours: the first visitor to cross the threshold is chosen in advance, debts are cleared before it, and nothing is swept out on the first day for fear of sweeping the luck with it. Banh chung is the food, square for the earth.
What people do
Banh chung - square sticky-rice cakes wrapped in leaves - are boiled overnight before the day. A peach branch in the north or an apricot branch in the south is brought into the house. The kitchen god is sent off a week before on a carp. Li xi, red envelopes, go to children.

Told differently elsewhere
Peach blossom in the north and apricot in the south, and the southern table sets out a fruit tray whose names read as a wish. Falls on the same new moon as the Chinese Spring Festival except in the years when the two countries time zones divide the moment between two days - which happens, and Vietnam then keeps its own date.
