In short
World Mental Health Day is an international awareness or commemorative observance and is optional in the calendar.
The story
World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October to encourage open discussion of mental health and to strengthen efforts for prevention, care and respect for people experiencing mental-health conditions. The observance was initiated in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health and later became a major annual campaign supported by the World Health Organization and organisations around the world. Early events focused on bringing mental health into public conversation at a time when stigma often kept depression, anxiety, psychosis, suicide and other concerns hidden. Annual themes now address issues such as access to services, mental health at work, young people's wellbeing, emergency settings and human rights. The day emphasises that mental health is part of overall health and is shaped by biological, psychological and social factors. Activities commonly include educational programmes, professional discussions, community support events and campaigns encouraging people to seek appropriate help without shame or discrimination.
Why it matters
World Mental Health Day is intended to build public awareness and encourage attention to its associated global issue.
