In short
The day Shatrunjaya reopens after the monsoon, and the steps fill before dawn.
The story
For the four months of chaturmas Jain monks do not travel, and Shatrunjaya is closed to pilgrims with them. It opens again on Kartik Purnima. The hill above Palitana carries some nine hundred temples and about 3,800 steps to Adishwar at the top, and on this morning tens of thousands climb it - many having walked to Palitana first. The tradition holds that Adinath, the first Tirthankar, preached here, which is what makes Shatrunjaya the first of the Jain tirthas rather than one of them.
Why it matters
A reopening rather than an anniversary. What is being marked is that the road is walkable again, which is a plainer and older kind of festival than most.
What people do
The climb starts well before first light to be done before the sun is high. Nothing is eaten on the hill and nothing is carried down.
